Sustrans Active Journeys
This term Martha and Evie (our active journeys co-ordinators) have been working incredibly hard alongside The School Council in their continued commitment to promoting Active Journeys to school.
The whole school came together for the National Competition – The Big Pedal. This involved promoting active travel to school and recording those who did. Children took part in two weeks of lessons based around active travel which included learning about different types of bicycles, exploring the physical, mental and environmental benefits of actively travelling to school.
In addition, we held a colouring competition to promote The Big Pedal. Examples can be found on Twitter. One winner from each class was awarded a throwing and catching game as a prize.
The school came 34th in the UK and a very impressive 2nd in Wales in their category. Thanks go to all children and staff who actively travelled to school and teachers who recorded the journeys for me to log onto the system.
In July 2021 we received A Big Pedal – outstanding achievement award for our efforts.
Every week until the end of term we have been holding an active journeys prize draw. All children who are able to actively travel to school are put forward into the draw. Last week a nursery child won a tennis set.
A Scooter Skills Training Day has been organised for Wednesday 30th June. All KS2 children will be invited to bring their scooters into school for a skills session within their class bubbles. All parents, staff and children have been notified of the event. A timetable and instructions for staff have been issued. Cancelled due to Covid restrictions. Online session to be organised.
As part of The Big Pedal the school entered a competition to re name The Big Pedal. Each class was asked to think of a new name. All entries were discussed by Martha and Evie who selected Walk and Wheels put forward by Tyler in Mr Thomas’ class as our school entry.
We are delighted to receive this message from Sustrans informing us of our success!!
Thanks so much for taking part in the Sustrans Big Pedal renaming competition.
As you’ll be aware we have outgrown the name Sustrans Big Pedal and asked schools to help us find a name that includes walking, using a wheelchair, cycling and scooting.
Thank you for your school’s entry Walk and Wheels.
We thought it was great.
Your school was one of six schools that included walk and wheel in your submission and inspired us to shortlist Sustrans Big Walk and Wheel as a new name for Sustrans Big Pedal.
We put it to a public vote and Sustrans Big Walk and Wheel came out on top, with 46% of the vote!
So it’s not just us that think it is a fantastic name.
We are delighted to announce, that from 2022, the new name for Sustrans Big Pedal will be Sustrans Big Walk and Wheel.
In Wales we will be introducing a bilingual logo for the event for the first time, so the name will be Sustrans Big Walk and Wheel/ Stroliwch a roliwch.
Thank you for your help creating this name.
Please do pass on our thanks and congratulations to the pupil(s) that helped create it.
We look forward to sharing the new logo using this new name in the near future.
To conclude this has been a very productive and rewarding term for Ysgol Bryn Deva. Thanks go to the children, parents, staff, the school council and our active journeys co-ordinators Martha and Evie.
The hard work undertaken this year means we are on target to achieving our silver award in the very near future.
And next year when we hear Sustrans Big Walk and Wheels we can all be so proud of our achievements.
Congratulations to Tyler Booth who entered the competition to rename “Sustrans Big Pedal”. His ideas were used to inspire the new name “Sustrans Big Walk and Wheels.”
In recognition of our outstanding achievements during The Big Pedal 2021 we have been given some scooters.
Thank you to all our Sustran volunteers who came into school today to give free safety checks to our bikes and scooters.
